187 Driving in Puglia

I will be driving in Italy for the first time this summer when we go on holiday to Puglia. You hear many stories about Italian drivers and i have seen for myself the traffic chaos in Italian cities. Could anyone please enlighten me on the standard of driving in Puglia, the condition of the roads etc and of course the best road map to buy for the region.

i find that driving in puglia is as good as anywhere in italy and for that matter anywhere in the uk, we use the green collins italy road map and it has got us where we wanted to go, my advise is go with the flow dont get worried if you get lost its never as bad as it seems, and try to be forceful but not aggressive when driving remember italians are born with a horn in there hand its not abusive just letting you know they are there, i find that defensive driving can get you into trouble as the italian drivers will make your mind up for you, nothing to worry about, ciao marco

hi, i had the same sort of reservations about driving in italy for the first time but I must say that it is not half as bad. yes there are careless drivers, and yes you should be ready for anything (people ovetaking on corners, the spontaneous creation of a middle lane on a single lane road, abrupt turns, abrups stops to chat to a friend and so forth).

on the other hand all this is easily negotiable, it also means that you are allowed some flexibility in the way you drive :) and as long as you don't speed you will be able to foresee any problems.

in the south of italy roadds are generally in a worst condition than the north but they are not dirt roads (unless you are planning to explore some really remote locations)

as for the best maps the michelin is a good one

if you want to plan your trip in advance try one of the following

Thanks for the info Ronald and the websites it's much appreciated. I shall be taking my time and driving very carefully. I am looking forward to the experience and the holiday itself as Puglia is a new region for me.

...just remember the traffic light code:

Red means 'go', yellow is just a 'pretty colour' and green means 'watch out - someone else may be going on red!' :)

whats a yellow traffic light i have neve seen a yellow traffic light in italy they just seem to go from red to green to red very quickly??
