Good morning. We are retired to Liguria and loving it. Is there anyone else out there in Liguria? I would love to exchange experiences - good and bad!

There's a number of Liggers out there; which end of it are you based in? Whilst we're not in Liguria, our base is Lunigiana which includes part of your great province, so whilst we not quite neighbours, I'd like you to think of us more as a cousin :D

We have a holiday home in Dolcedo about 7 km inland from Imperia and there are a couple of other Forum users in the area. Where abouts are you?

We are about 20k inland from Imperia just outside a small village called Cesio. We have a huge amount of land that we are slowly clearing after some 40yrs of neglect. Hence most of our time is spent in the garden. Not complaining - we love it. The idea of retiring and sitting around did not appeal to either of us and we both love the outdoor life. We brought our dog with us and since then have aquired another stray dog and a cat. How often do you come over to your holiday home? We haven't yet visited Dolcedo, so what is the history of your choosing that place? We found ours on the internet and bought it three years ago, but moved here just 18months ago.

Its a long story, but briefly, we have been coming to Italy for some years and hoped to retire here. We found our house on the internet and bought it 3yrs ago, and that was our first visit to the region. We chose it because we saw Antonio Carluccio on TV, here on one of his cookery programmes and loved the look of it. We are inland from Imperia, about 20k close to a small village called Cesio, so at the other end from your neck of the woods I think! We keep busy in the 'garden', some 15 acres, which is why we bought the place. Quite a change as we are pretty isolated up here. We used to own a hotel/restaurant/bar so it's good to be away from people for a while!

Hi Tanny,

We moved to the Ovadese hills, which are near to the ligurian border, nearly two years ago. In that time we have restored our farmhouse and made it help pay for its keep by turning it into a bed and breakfast. Like you, we have a lot of land to pull out of neglect, but are slowly winning the battle. Working outside is great, certainly much healthier than our previous careers as teachers. We are lucky (or not, depending on how you see it!) because the farm is bordered by a three castle percorso which is used by local people and tourists, so were are never lonely!! Living here has been an exciting challenge, with ups and the occasional downs, but we have no intention of ever going back.
