No, Frank - it was closed because the original subject - andyS - asked for it to be closed, and the moderator also discussed with andyS and Relaxed whether the moderator would come in for "attack" if she closed it.
Now, she also invited Relaxed to open a new thread - and you have done it for Relaxed! Great!
Let us get back to giovanni's post - about whether anonymity is a viable/good/valid position in a forum - which I think is a really interesting subject. Since you have been so quick off the mark, Relaxed has not had time to create an intelligible new thread...but it is very pleasing that you think this whole issue is worth of a discussion - unpersonalised - as all virtual presences should be!!
Let's go...

I am an individual, as is everyone on here.
this is real, no different to writing a letter or making a phone call,we all exsits,
and as such what we say and think is real, or rather should be.
I am giovanni, thats my real name, i have nothing to hide, some would say very
little to offer this forum, but when someone posts and i read it, i take it in.
whether i agree or not is irrelevent, but i am dealing with real people, not
made up ones... i hope.

I once posted in a thread which I had started that the thread belonged to me, and I could take the discussion anywhere I wanted. I was kindly told that once a thread has been initiated that it is the forum members who in the end will steer the thread. It was a heated thread but the discussion was allowed to proceed all within reason. It was eventualy locked, but with good reason and a fair explanaiton to all.
This does not seem to be the case any more!!
I have revisited that thread lately and it no longer makes any sense. Members and moderators have deleted some entries and others have edited their original posts. This should not be allowed. I must admit I am also guilty of doing this out of fustration.
Frank

Giovanni - this is what I posted in the original "heads roll" thread - and what I think is really a good subject for depersonalised discussion. This was in reply to your post in the locked thread,
"Oh dear, I didn't want to get re-involved with this thread, but I can't resist!!
I have been "doing forums" for a very long time - (I was so pleased when I managed to afford a new modem which performed at 14.4kbps, which might give you an idea of How Long??)
And I see absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying, contributing to, and arguing about forum life as a total anonymity. This point of view, is IMO, quite valid. I might be the Duchess of Cornwall in real life - who knows!
There is another section of forum users who make physical - rather than virtual - friends, and who swap addresses and enjoy get togethers after having met on the forum. That is fine too. There is plenty of room for people of all types - but if you come across a widow twanky or a Relaxed, they fit into the first category, and have the absolute right to be private - if they want to be.
Nobody's real life head has rolled - just a virtual identity - and I think that for the forum administrator to 'out' the new identity was rather unwise. But them who am I - a geek :)"
So - let us get on with the discussion!!

Unless widowtwanky has deleted his identity - always a possibility - I don't see why the original "heads roll" thread has been made unintelligible - but you could be right -I'll go and have another look.
Grazie..

... Relaxed, for clarifying! :)
Frank - it's not always the mods deleting posts, but also some members themselves... for many various reasons... ;) Send me a pm if you want some kind of investigation & I'll have a nosy...
Now to your issue... there are many people on forums (fora??) using different names than their own. Many never post at all but rather read and take in all the info provided. They are due their privacy, as they seem to prefer it. Others, like me, just ramble on...
I started years ago using 2 different names as mine always already existed! Plus it's rather long... A shorter name is often also quicker to be remembered.
Iona is the one who writes (or tries to write) medieval fiction, exists on messenger, and was my pseudonym while doing medieval re-enactment a couple of years ago. Some kind of alter ego perhaps... but I still use my real name in my signature.

I wasn't talking about that thread.. It was before your time..

You have not answered my original question. Is free and open discussion still welcome on this forum?
Thanks..

It should still be visible... I think Frank meant an earlier thread.

Giovanni - you make real contributions, and you choose to use your real name: and that is commendable. But there are contributors on the forum - who would prefer to remain anonymous - just people (in real life) who would rather not be identified "on the ground" as in "I know you, you are Relaxed".
That, for me, would be very scary - and would also make the assumption that I give my advice free: if someone needs a specific answer, I reserve the right to charge: in the same way as Charles Joseph would reserve the right to charge for specific advice on a specific topic.
But none of this commercial stuff means we cannot have a good argumnent about whether we can be anonymous on the forum!

Wow, people leaving, people being cucked out...its all very confusing:confused: And a little bit scary
How many people have been chucked, and how many have left of their own accord?
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Don't worry about it Sally, the forum is good place most of the time. It's just people and misunderstandings and as notaio has said like a family when you've been on here a while. :)
total agreement with frank.
in fact was about to start a new thread, called, oh dear moderators......
afterall it broke none of the rules, and cannot believe that you bowed to
one person demanding it to be closed..........
in fact i find it insulting that persons are now doing this far to often for no
reason what so ever......... by what rights do some feel that they can call
the shots ...............moderators, take your power back, lead, don,t be led.
