3527 What not to say!!!!!

More than what to say perhaps it's best to start with what not to say!!!
Living on the border of Emilia Romagna and Le Marche one of the first expressions I heard was " meglio un morto in casa che un marchegiano alla porta"!!!
Better a death in the house than someone from Le Marche at the door!!!!
Sounds terribel but dates back to the times when the people of Le Marche were ruled by the vatican and sent to collect taxes from nearby Romagna!!!
Thankfully today even the marchegiani don't want to pay tax.

Nice story - sheds light on the reason Umbrians (and probably marchegiani?) don't put salt in bread.
It is difficult to imagine, today, that the Papal State was historically a despotic ruler, and that the "evil noblemen" like the Montefeltro family, were actually the "goodies".
I'm looking forward to reading about Urbino - which is home to my favourite museum/gallery in the whole world - of course, I am referring to Il Palazzo Ducale!

Moved your posts to the Marche section... but just noticed that some links don't seem to be working correctly... press on the Talk section in the Marche thread and end up in Umbria! ;)

Maybe Ronald's got a bit of a job to do there... or my lappy's playing up.

Looking forward to more such gems, Dream Academy!

Hey Relaxed,
the reason why Umbrians, Marchigiani and Tuscans don't put salt in their bread is that the taxes on salt were so very high when these areas where part of the Papal State that people couldn't just afford it! And they needed salt for preserving meats and making cheese so they just skipped it where it was not so necessary...
