I have been told it is not possibe to get cover for earthquake for old and stone built properties in Italy, yet an English company is advertising this cover in Italy magazine. Is this cover genuine?

Apparently it is. There are a few UK based companies that will offer this kind of cover, though apparently it is not possible to get the same from Italian companies.

....everything has its cost though...I've seen some earthquake probability "maps" somewhere on line; not sure where tho.....that's no help at all though it is?!

First time I have used the Forum - what an excellent service. Thanks for the prompt replies. I have been quoted about £350 p.a. by a UK Insurance company to include earthquake cover which seems OK for peace of mind. I was just concerned about how genuine the cover was particularly since I could not get cover from any Italian company.

One thing to look at is the "excess" (franchigia) - this is the amount you have to pay towards the damage caused by an earthquake.
The Italian PostItaliana does offer earthquake insurance, but you have to meet the first 2,600 Euros of the damage, and one of the English companies require you to pay the first £1000.
As in everything, you must read the small print - quite often earthquake cover is limited to the "main house", and doesn't cover outbuildings or pools, garden walls, gates etc.etc
