3885 Codice Fiscale - can non-residents get one?

I've been reading the threads which refer to the uses/benefits of a codice fiscale. I get the impression that only residents (whether Italians or not) can get one? Is this correct? If I were to spend a few months in Italy on an extended stay without intending to settle there and retaining my UK residency, could I apply for one?

No you don't have to be a resident and in fact need a codice fiscale to purchase a property see http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/general-chat-about-italy-italy-magazine-forums/3783-bank-accounts-mobile-phones.html?highlight=Codice+fiscale#post32284

Dave is right. We even obtained a fiscal code for a Russian living in Moscow last week! You must have a fiscal code before buying a house in Italy, as well as opening a bank acount, for which you also need a fiscal code. I was asked for my fiscal code when buying some tiles the other day. They entered the code into their computer and it saved them having to type in my name, address, etc. So much for the privacy laws here!

Thank you. That's all very clear.

you can either obtain the Codice Fiscale by paying a visit to an Agenzia delle Entrate (Inland Revenue) office in Italy or contacting the Italian Consulate in the UK.

If you live anywhere near London just pop in to the Italian Consulate and ask for one, it took me 30 mins, paper copy though, still waiting for the card, the paper copy helped when stopped by the police, didnt have passport or PdiS with me whoops

I managed to get my codice fiscale (after waiting for what seemed forever) but don't have a card. Is it something I have to apply for or does it just arrive one day?

Seem to remember that someone said it was possible to apply online for the card if you already had the number. Am I dreaming this?

Thanks, Jacki

Jacki, you memory does serve you correctly! This was covered in this thread
