I don't think that the sonic mole things are much good. Gassing is the best for them. :) Otherwise you have to keep a close eye on their runs and dig them up when you see movement. Then you can humanely bash them to death with your spade.
Alternatively, you can try the lastest anti yob treatment from Australia. Rochdate council in Sydney is going to play Barry Manilow records in a notorious car park to get rid of the yoof jobs.
There are several people on here who have some particularly nasty cracked records that I's sure they would be only too delighted to share with you. ;)

Yeah! Moles wiv attitude!
That's a good idea Tinks.. issue the moles with ASBO's.. they can trade them on eBay, make a fortune and move up the property ladder! :D

Maybe you could also try flooding the run? Do you have an outdoor privvy, say in an old pig sty?
Little blighters!
Does anyone have experience in dealing with moles? I have visited the local ferramenta and he suggested a device that you put in the ground that sends shockwaves. My dad recommended running my motorbike exhaust through a garden hose and into their runs. Anyone have advice?
Thanks
Jon

i've tried the sonic things they actually seem to like it (the box said they'd be gone in a range of 500 metres) there are more than before.then i tried deadly crystals (i think it was re cycled cyclon b) i nearly got sick but not the moles, then i tried smoke ( me getting sick but not the moles)the dog digs huge cavernous holes when he hears them but can't ever catch any so now i have dog holes + mole holes,i've tried "lurking" at 05.30am with a zappa to kill them whilst they trundle in their tunnels but you've got to be batman to be fast enough to "zap " them. The only suggestion is NOT to plant carciofi where they are they'll destroy them, plant them ,possibly at the head of vine rows they don't like grape vines.IF you find some wonderful solution please inform.....

I believe that you can also get traps the you dig into their runs.

Poor moles ... :(
Aren't there any humane alternatives?? No local animal welfare group that can advise?
They must be good for something...

We used to buy cyanide tablets that you put down the holes and it would wipe out everything in the tunnels (this was for mole rats though as no true moles in Africa).
A cheaper alternative that has limited effectiveness but does work is to pop some fresh dog poop down the holes and seal them up.

I thought this was a wind up, until I googled it.........
I've found that if you have a dog, it will come in handy:
Grab a stick from the yard and carefully prod the mound to find the hole to the tunnel (make sure you don't collapse the hole/tunnel). Once you find it, burrow your stick in to clear the tunnel of any debris. Take a paper towel and grab some fresh dog poo, and then cram that into the tunnel as far as you can. The moles don't like the smell and tend to go somewhere else.

Well, I've tried all sorts of things but eventually stooped to a very bizarre solution. I opened a run, put in some dog poo, and closed the run. Not had a mole since!
I lived in Belgium for 8 years where moles outnumbered the frites 10 to 1. It was a big topic of conversation. I heard of about 20 remedies. The hemophylica rumors, I think were false and broken glass shards got me nowhere. What worked without doubt was Castor Oil. Think ricin for you detective fans. The effect is to send the moles in evey direction but your yard. My Belgim neighbor is still wondering why his yard looked like a volcanic plain while mine was smooth as Biere Blanche. Last I heard he was unsuccessfully piping Barry Manilow's "I Write the Songs..." out his back window.

My parents used to keep rabbits and every so often they would escape and burrow through into the neighbours garden. Once when walking in his backyard he put his foot into a hole that went down just over a foot. I can still remember him shouting and screaming about the huge size of the 'bloody moles' in the Cape. Was priceless and we never set him right on who the real culprits were...

I think I will give the dog poo a whirl! Tonight I have a local farmer arriving to help and give the real italian spin on things so I will mention the dog poo and see what he says!!
Not sure on the gassing approach as in many countries this is now illegal - not sure on the position in Italy. Here in the depths of the countryside it is more of who you know, if it is illegal that does not seem to matter too much so I await the local knowledge with anticipation.

Well, if you're talking about cyanide gas, quite probably, but I can't see how it would be illegal to do as your father suggested and hook up a hose to your motorcycle's exhaust. After all, you're pumping those fumes into the air for people to breathe normally, so it would be very odd if you couldn't use them to get rid of a pest. (Sorry, Becky!)
By the way, you may already know this, but if you decide to gas the little ******s you need to make sure you use your motorcycle's exhaust and not one on a vehicle which has a catalytic converter. It's the carbon monoxide that will send them off to sleep permanently and one of the things a catalytic converter does is change carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. CO2 might give them a headache and make them feel a bit breathless, but nothing more serious unless you managed to completely replace all the air in the burrow system with exhaust fumes. Which seems unlikely.

Well the local man came and now I feel a little useless as he has taken total ownership of the problem. His remedy is twofold. Firstly I had to make some bells to hang from the trees - made from old paint tins, wire and nails - apparently this is the noise that they like the least. The second part is more in line with the dog poo. He dug up some of the mounds and poured some diesel in the holes saying they really don't like the smell of this stuff.
I offered him something for his trouble and diesel and he refused but instead brought round 5 litres of his homemade wine. After a good tasting session the talpe are much less of a concern!

The home made wine sounds the best part of the remedy! ;) Let us know in a few weeks if ya moles really have gone!

If you get enough, I'm surprised no one has mentioned moleskin trousers and waistcoats like the old navvies used to wear... very hardwearing.
Poor moles..
Thank God Becky has gone to Italy! Can you imagine? She would have a fit to think moles are being lighlty tossed in fumes before being battered and deep fried.. personally, I'd bash em on the head and flatten them out before dipping them in breadcrumbs :D :D
