Here is a very useful word that you can add to your Italian vocabulary:
Addirittura
It has a literal meaning of “straight” in the sense of “directly”.
E andato addirittura all’ospedale – He went straight to the hospital.
It can sometimes mean “even”:
Non posso aspettare addirittura cinque minuti – I can’t even wait five minutes.
You can use it to mean “really” in the sense of “Is it true?” when you want to express interest in
what someone is saying:
Sono andato a Roma la settimana scorsa – I went to Rome last week
Addirittura? - Really?
The word has other meanings but the “Really?” sense is the easiest for a foreigner to use.
