The Italian government has proposed a one-off “entrance fee” for visitors arriving in Venice by cruise ship, rail or air in the hope of boosting funds for restoration work in the city.
Supporters of the scheme say that one of the problems the city faces is that many visitors find accommodation outside the city and, when they go into the centre, take their own food with them, thus depriving the Serenissima of much-needed revenue.
Critics say that the proposal just reinforces Venice’s image as a “theme park” and that the scheme will be difficult to administrate.
However, if you are planning a trip to Venice do not worry: the scheme is not yet in force and the charge is likely to be nominal: one euro per person has been quoted.
Do you agree that the fee is necessary?
