Ed.: The Inspired Stays series highlights hotels we love around Italy. Each property is independently reviewed by an Italy Magazine writer, who is generally hosted on a complimentary basis. Our contributors do not accept compensation or gifts in exchange for specific types of coverage. We only showcase properties we would genuinely recommend overall.

Why we love it

With an inimitable location crowning Rome’s Spanish Steps, 87 uniquely designed rooms and suites, and a “Golden Book” featuring signatures of a roster of guests from Alain Delon to Woody Allen (and, yes, Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, too), the Hotel Hassler Roma is a local icon fit for royalty on Roman holiday.

What to expect

If Rome’s Spanish Steps are the “Stairway to Heaven,” then the Hotel Hassler Roma, which stands right at the summit, is heaven itself. Discerning visitors looking for a mix of historic and contemporary will feel divinely at home at this landmark hotel; it’s outfitted with French crystal, Venetian lamps and chandeliers, 19th-century mirrors, splendid tapestries and appliqués as well as other decorative accents that harmoniously co-mingle with elements of modern design.

The Hassler first opened its doors in 1893 and has since welcomed royalty, dignitaries and more than its fair share of stars, from the Beatles to Cate Blanchett (look no further than the “Golden Book” of guest signatures for evidence). Currently helmed by twin siblings Roberto Wirth Jr. and Veruschka Wirth, who respectively serve as Executive Chairman and CEO, the hotel has been part of a famous Swiss hotelier family dynasty since its establishment. As the sixth generation of owners, the young and passionate Wirth twins describe the Hassler as being  “in [their] DNA” and run the hotel with the involvement of all the family members.

Location, location, location

At the nucleus of Rome’s historic center is the famed Piazza di Spagna. Rising above the square, in a majestic 135-step procession, are the Spanish Steps. Set atop these steps is the venerable 16-century church Trinità dei Monti, with the Hassler just next door. It’s within walking distance of just about every historic point of interest, but in the immediate surroundings are the Villa Borghese gardens (and the Caravaggio-and-Bernini-filled Galleria Borghese within the park), along with the busy and fashionable Via dei Condotti and its many boutiques.

Where you’ll sleep

You don’t have to book the Presidential Suite Trinità di Monti or the Penthouse Villa Medici Suite to lodge large at the Hassler. Each room and suite has its own individual design, and you’ll spot everything from classic Italianate to Art Deco elements. Many boast stupendous views of Rome, and all feature upscale mini bars, pillow menus and marble bathrooms stocked with the hotel’s Amorvero amenities.

Dining & drinks

The Hassler’s food and beverage offering includes the one-Michelin-star restaurant, Imàgo, situated on the sixth floor with incredible panoramic views; the Salone Eva and Palm Court restaurant and the Hassler Bar, as well as the neighboring, Hassler-owned Il Palazzetto, a hotel, wine bar and event space. Imàgo has been under the direction of executive chef Andrea Antonini since 2018 and in 2024 was recognized with the “Best European Wine List 2024” award by The World of Fine Wines. Salone Eva is the all-day dining option and is a lovely spot for an after-dinner drink with live piano music. In the warmer months, guests can indulge in al fresco dining at Pam Court, a garden surrounded by ancient stone walls, flowers and ivy.

Service notes

Having hosted prestigious guests for over a century, the Hassler has service that’s sharp, rigorous and round-the-clock, yet naturally convivial. Want to bypass the throngs of people and see Roma with a bit of pizzazz? The hotel’s private electric car is at your service. Need some direction in the gym? Personal trainers are available. Hotel staff are on standby to respond to even the most esoteric requests.

Spa time

Hassler’s Amorvero Spa is an eye of calm in the storm that Rome can be. It currently has a solid roundup of standard beauty treatments and massages on offer, and private appointments for the sauna and steam bath are also available. But an exciting renovation is currently underway, with an expanded two-floor, 700-square-meter (7535-square-foot) wellness facility set to open in summer 2025.
