Italy’s state-run railway company has announced that they expect to be finished with a new high-speed route by 2015 that will cut travel time between Rome and Milan to a mere 2 hours and 20 minutes.
The new trains will supposedly run every 10 minutes and cut down the time it takes to travel between Italy’s “two capitals" from more than three hours to just over two hours.
There are three goals that must first be accomplished if the 2015 date is to be realized. First, the high-speed line must be extended through Bologna by 2012. Secondly, the railway group must procure new trains capable of traveling at 360km/h.
Lastly, they must obtain approval and complete a controversial underground tunnel in Florence, even though critics have argued that vibrations from the super speedy trains could cause Michelangelo’s “David” to collapse.
