The University for Foreigners in Perugia is to introduce a new scholarship in memory of Meredith Kercher, the British student who was murdered in the city on 1st November 2007.
Speaking on Tuesday, Mayor Wladimiro Boccali said that Meredith Kercher had been the city’s guest and that she should have a place in its collective memory. He also said that he was thinking of her family.
Amanda Knox from Seattle, her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and an Ivory Coast man called Rudy Guede are all serving sentences for the murder. Guede, whose sentence has already been reduced, is to appeal again in December whilst appeal hearings for Knox and Sollecito will begin on 23rd November. A decision is not expected before January or February 2011 at the earliest.
Two films about the murder are being planned and shooting has already begun on one of them in Italy, much to the distress of the Kercher family. The second film, a British production, will probably feature Colin Firth as a journalist.
The Kercher family commemorated the third anniversary of Meredith’s death quietly on Monday, visiting her grave and “spending a little time with her.”
