One of the monuments damaged in the 2009 earthquake that devastated parts of Abruzzo, has been restored.

The fontana delle 99 cannelle in L’Aquila, which was severely damaged during last year’s April 6th earthquake, is flowing with water once again. The “Fountain of the 99 Spouts,” is one of the best known monuments in Abruzzo. The famous fountain featuring 93 faces, and 6 additional spouts along the base, pouring water en masse.

The restoration was made possible with a 700,000 Euro investment from FAI, an Italian foundation dedicated to preserving the country’s landscape, art and nature. The high price tag was due to the necessity of a complete overhaul of the ancient monument’s structural integrity.

L’Aquila was the town hardest hit in last year’s April 6th disaster, and the restoration of la Fontana delle 99 cannelle, signals a major step towards finally reconstructing the community’s historic center.
