The lemon grove (limonaia) at the Boboli Gardens in Florence will be open to visitors starting today, for ten mornings until April.
Visitors will have the chance to observe, study and enjoy the scent of lemons, citrons, grapefruits, bitter oranges, mandarins, limes and more citrus fruits.
The plants, kept in the limonaia during the winter months, and moved from May to October to different locations within the gardens, are all descendants from the Medici cultivars. They include such rare varieties as the Citrus aurantium Canaliculata, introduced in Florence by Francesco I, or the Citrus aurantium bizzarria, which Ferdinando II used to enrich the collection at Boboli. They have a remarkable historic and botanical value.
Visitors will be provided with a flyer with information relating to the citrus plants in the field.
