London’s Barbican is staging a musical tribute to Italian composer and conductor Nino Rota, who composed the themes of numerous films, including the first two films of Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’, and Federico Fellini’s ‘La Dolce Vita’, ‘8½’ and ‘Giulietta degli spiriti' (Juliet Of The Spirits).
After Rota’s death in 1979, American music producer Hal Willner brought out a tribute album featuring the Italian composer’s music ‘Amarcord Nino Rota’. It was the first of many to feature then-unknown musicians such as American trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.
On 22 November 2013, the Barbican will host a performance of Rota’s pieces on the album led by American jazz composer Carla Bley. The programme includes pieces from ‘La Dolce Vita’, ‘8½’, Juliet of the Spirits, ‘La Strada’ (The Road) and ‘Il bidone’ (The Swindle and The Swindlers). Among the performers are American harmonica player Karen Mantler, Southern Rhodesian conductor Mike Gibbs and American trumpeter Steven Bernstein.
Tickets range in price from £17.50 to £25.
