Possible Threat to Colosseum From Construction Of Underground Line
A probe has been launched into the delayed construction of Rome’s metro C underground line because of concerns regarding the foundation of the Colosseum.
The Italian press reports that Italian heritage and environmental group Italia Nostra (Our Italy) announced serious concerns regarding the project in April. Italia Nostra is reported to be concerned because of the “chance that the stability of the Colosseum could be at risk, that construction costs could rise, and that the economy and tourism to the city could be damaged.” A regional audit court has launched an investigation.
The extent of the risks, if any, to the Colosseum is still unclear. The ancient amphitheatre covers an area of six acres (24,000 square metres) and lies at the entrance of a busy underground stop.
Work started on the latest underground line in 1990. Originally, the works were slated to be complete in 2000. Administrators point out that building an underground line in the Italian capital is a difficult task, given that any artefacts uncovered have to be excavated before construction can continue.
Italia Nostra is a not for profit campaigning organisation, which is dedicated to the protection and promotion of Italy’s historical, artistic and environmental patrimony. The organisation is campaigning to make Rome’s historic centre a pedestrian-only area.
