The death toll from Monday's devastating earthquake in Italy's central Abruzzo region stood at 278 Thursday morning and the ground continues to shake as the center of seismic moves north.
Two significant aftershocks were recorded during the night, the first measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale and the second 5.1.
The National Geophysics and Vulcanology Institute (INGV) confirmed on Friday that the center of seismic activity had shifted north of the region's capital L'Aquila.
Italian President Giorgio Napolitano arrived in Abruzzo Friday morning to inspect the extensive damage, pay homage to the dead and meet with survivors.
After L'Aquila he will visit two towns which were among the hardest hit by Monday's earthquake, Onna and San Demetrio.
