The powerful earthquake that hit the central Italian Abruzzo region early Monday left a ''horrible scene of death and destruction,'' Italian Police Chief Antonio Manganelli said after arriving in L'Aquila.
He added that ''thousands of policemen'' were involved in the rescue effort.
The death toll from the 6.2 magnitude quake currently stands at around 100 and is expected to rise.
