Stromboli calmed down Friday after blowing its stack the night before, belching volcanic rocks onto its summit and spraying the island's homes with ash.
Schools opened and people went about their business as normal while scientists continued to monitor the volcano - one of the most active in Europe and a major tourist attraction - despite damage to high-altitude equipment.
