As torrential rain continued to fall upon Northern and Central Italy on Monday, ANSA reported two deaths in mudslides in Massa Carrara [Tuscany] and another death in a nearby village.
Rail lines around Vicenza [Veneto] were closed by flooding and many inhabitants of the town were evacuated. The Mayor of Vicenza has appealed to people not to drive until the waters recede.
A fifty-year-old man who went down to the basement of his house just as the River Bacchiglione burst its banks is missing in the town of Caldogno [Veneto]. Many people in the town are still trapped in their houses as they await rescue from the flood waters. The Bacchiglione has also flooded other small towns in the Padua area.
There are road closures and diversions along the A/4 “Serenissima” motorway this morning and Guido Bertolaso, the Head of Italy’s Civil Protection Department, has arrived in Veneto to assess the situation. As he does so, torrential rain is reported in Liguria.
The South has not entirely escaped the bad weather, with the Province of Naples having been badly affected by high winds.
