(ANSA) - Opposition councillors in the Ligurian town of Stella have called for an exorcist to be brought in to expel the evil spirits they say are possessing the mayor and his team.
A formal proposal to engage the services of a professional exorcist was tabled by Adriano Melis, head of the opposition bloc, during Monday night's session of the town council.
"They are taking incomprehensible decisions, probably because they are influenced by mysterious external forces," he said, noting that a new course for exorcists opened recently in Rome.
Stella's mayor, Nicolo' Vicenzi, said the town had much more important business to deal with and dismissed the proposal as an empty piece of "provocation". The motion was voted down but Melis and his aides said they were preparing new initiatives to make sure the mayor faced up to the community's "serious problems".
