On June the 6th, we reported on the traffic problems drivers in Italy faced when returning from a long weekend. The problems behind the long 200km traffic queues where attributed to the amount of roadwork going on throughout Italy.
According to some estimates there are almost 200 sites with ongoing work, with several not expected to be completed in time to deal with the increased traffic of July and August. According to AISCAT, the Italian body representing the 23 companies that manage Italy’s toll roads, there are 172 sites between Torino and Palermo. In particular, the A4, which connects Torino and Milano, has 38 trouble spots with ongoing roadwork. Other roads that are expected to cause problems are the A1 from Milano to Napoli, the A22 from Modena to Brennero and the A20 from Messina to Palermo. In order to deal with the problems some of the sites will be closed during the busiest days to allow traffic to flow through.
In addition, to the above problems the picture is complicated by the closure of the Frejus (http://www.tunneldufrejus.com/) tunnel, an issue that our forum members discussed in length .
