While working on a project to install a heating network, right next to Milan’s Cathedral, remains of an ancient wall have resurfaced.
The remains suggest an entire city, possibly dating back to the 16th century, or even earlier, is hidden there, and nobody knew anything about it until now.
Work has been halted while experts date and evaluate the discovery. The installation of the pipes to provide heating for the Archbishop’s palace and for the Museo del Novecento was scheduled to be completed before the beginning of Expo 2015, next April.
It is not at all uncommon in Italy to discover remains of ancient monuments and sites underground during excavation works to modernize the cities.
