Vanni created altarpieces for every important church in Siena and received commissions in Rome, notably from Pope Clement VIII for an altarpiece for the Basilica of St. Peter. This monographic exhibition on Vanni includes more than 60 paintings and drawings by him, as well as prints following his designs. Presenting more than 300 works executed between 1909 and 1944, the exhibition encompasses painting, sculpture, architecture, design, ceramics, fashion, film, photography, advertising, free-form poetry, publications, music, theatre and performance. Guggenheim Museum, New York, New York When: 21 February 2014 to 1 September 2014 Website: http://www.guggenheim.org/ Leonardo Da Vinci: Treasures From The Biblioteca Reale, Turin For the first time in New York, the Morgan presents Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Codex on the Flight of Birds’, together with one of his most celebrated drawings, the ‘Head of a Young Woman’, which served as a model for the ‘Virgin of the Rocks’. The pieces will be displayed with a selection of drawings by Leonardo and his followers. The works are on loan from the Biblioteca Reale in Turin. There are almost 40 sculptures from the 15th to 18th century in the show that exemplify the genre from its beginnings in Renaissance Italy to its dissemination across Europe. The Hill Collection is distinguished by rare, autograph masterpieces by Italian sculptors such as Andrea Riccio, Giambologna and Giuseppe Piamontini. The works by the Giambologna school evoke the splendour of the late Renaissance courts, while the richness of the international Baroque is represented by Alessandro Algardi’s religious sculptures. The show features more than 100 works on paper and chronicles the originality of drawing during Venice’s second Golden Age.

The pieces are divided into groups according to technique. Scarpa’s radical glass designs were more than decorative or utilitarian objects and contemporary critics regarded them as examples of avant-garde modernity. Among the first female artists to achieve success in the 17th century, her painting ‘Judith Slaying Holofernes’ (c. 1620) epitomises her career. The masterpiece is making its first appearance in Chicago on loan from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The exhibition draws on the holdings of the Art Institute as well as a private collection in Chicago, putting Gentileschi’s work together with those of other by artists including Jacopo de’ Barbari and Felice Ficherelli.
