This is an interesting question because it now seems we cannot give specific details of places we would personally recommend, (name address and phone on or website). If we have such information we must now PM you Lisa C. Daft isn't it? There has been a thread on this subject so perhaps you can back track.

Noble, I think you've got confused - we can give this info on the forum. Personal recommendations and suggestions are fine - it's the posts/members that/who set out to soley advertise their own/friends services that are frowned upon.

Hi JC
I think what noble was quoting was based on a similer thread that I started re the jazz festival in Umbria.............here is what was posted.......Noble I hope this is OK to quote.
If anyone wants the name of a hotel right the in the centro storico off Piazza Italia, which is old fashioned but charming and where you can dine in their courtyard during Umbria Jazz. Actually the food is variable but the staff are so kind. PM me.
Last edited by Noble; Yesterday at 07:59 PM.. Reason: Cristiana requested not post name & address of hotels must PM
So its not just matey - matey spam. I do think it was a tad heavy handed.

Noble I think this has always been the case but now the rule is being evoked. Fair enough I think.

Intersting Sally. I have now re read the Forum Rules and cannot see any rule that says that bonafide Forum members, cannot make personal recommendations in answer to a Posters question....where can I find a Restaurant, Hotel, Company where I can...etc etc...???
Can you find this rule in the Forum Rules? Seems that it's not being evoked....more like being choked. Once you have searched Sally I'd appreciate knowing if you can find what I cannot. I will then PM the Administrator (Cristiana) with my comments as that is a Forum Rule.

Wow! I'm gobsmacked! It's strange as we have always been able to give out personal recommendations on the forum.
I suppose Cristiana (being the new Admin) could be unaware that we have "always done it this way" - but perhaps we should ask for clarification as I agree with you that it is a bit "heavy handed". If we are not allowed to do this - then how will it benefit other members in the future if PMs are to be the only way of giving personal advice and suggestions?
I understand "free" advertising is frowned upon (rightly so) but this seems to be taking it to an extreme.
What say you? Should we start a thread to request clear guidance - or just ignore it and carry on as usual?

You mean something like this...
I know a really nice restaurant in the village on the big hill (the one opposite the small hill). Anyway you’ll have to do some detective work and ask for the restaurant where the owner has brown hair and a mangy dog (can’t give you his name, but everyone knows him). I’ll give you a clue, name starts with a G. He usually parks his P***a outside.
They serve that really nice sparkling wine, you know … the one that begins with a ‘P’ (but I can’t tell you because it’s advertising). Even though you don’t know what I am talking about, I recommend it.
Anyway, follow the road out of the main town, and turn left at the Supermarket (you know, the one with the yellow lettering and begins with a C).
If you need to make a reservation, use that big yellow book with all the numbers in it (can’t tell you what the book is called), and phone them up, even though you don’t really know who you need to call…
Have a nice lunch.

You cunning old crone. You didn't think I was going to give out the name of the restaurant THAT easily...:laughs:. See you there tomorrow.

Thanks, we will definitely check out the places you recommend. We will have about 6 or 7 days to explore the area and want to spend a day in Anzi visiting the town some of my husband's relatives came from. If possible, we'd like to be centrally located to visit most of the sites. We'll be driving down from Rome. Any lodging recommendations would be most welcome.

Sorry Noble. I also haven't time for reading the rules but I accept what you say in retrospect.. What you need to do now is find a thread from say a year ago, pre Cristiana where there are direct links to hotels and restaurants to where people have stayed or eaten at and the posts there within have been allowed to stand and remain unmoderated. Then contact Admin.

Here is one such thread. Who wants to ship it to admin?

Hello,
I thought that too much details and restaurant or hotel's names could lead spammers to the ITALY Magazine Forums or new members to post for the sake of advertising their accommodation or similar things.
All of your advice is precious for people who get lost in a place with so many restaurants and having not a clue of which one a friend would recommend to him!
I really love how you help new members with your experiences and opinions so keep on do it. Just please it would be better not to give too many external links to avoid further problems with spam.
Thank you.
Cristiana
ps: Noble, you misunderstood my message. I didn't say you that you "must" PM. I kindly asked you to do so, I didn't mean to be aggressive, as you are trying to make me look.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Thank you for your reply Cristiana. However what constitutes too many??? Either no links or every link otherwise your really do have a full time job here moderating.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Dear Cristiana, I had hoped to follow the Forum Rules, once I had discretely gathered up a few opinions from Forum members, and write to you using the PM system, as requested in those Rules, which I have now re-read twice. But as you have commented here, it seems more appropriate to reply to you "in public" rather than privately.
On the 2.2.09 you sent me a private message entitled.
no contact details please
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Noble,
I'd prefer you don't give details about the name and the contacts of any hotel or restaurant.
Please, send this information via private message to the one interested.
It would be kind from you to modify your own post.
Thank you
Cristiana
I did not think you aggressive but I was suprised. I did wonder if the rules had changed whilst I had been in England for a week but they had not. Please would you explain why you decided to send me this message when what you ask, goes against the Forum Rules, which we must all adhere to, as bonefide Forum members. The Spam excuse doesn't convince me, afterall we are all able to spot Spammers and ask for their comments to be deleted by the Moderators.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
i see your point - my thought was that by keeping recommendations private we would avoid a flow of spam and situations where people try to game the system by first trying to be helpful and then advertising anyway. it is not a change in rules - simply a suggestion. it seems to be causing more fuss than it should though... so I guess it fine for "percy" to let us know what the great wine was

Lisa, Near Anzi you have a couple options: There is the Giubileo Hotel about halfway between Potenza and Anzi, large modern hotel that seems to do a lot of conferences but they have good service, plus closer to the superstrada to get around the region. Closer to Anzi there is a place that has cottages you can stay at which have a per person rate. There is also a B&B closer to Potenza. We usually stay at a B&B near Abriola, the roads to Abriola are rather curvy so not a great location if you are wanting to do a lot of traveling in the area...though the family that runs the place are wonderful.

Thanks so much for the information. Would you happen to have the names of the B and B near Abriola as well as the one near Potenza?
We will be driving down from Rome after landing at Fiumicino and plan on spending 6 or 7 nights in Basilicata exploring the area after visiting Anzi. We would like to pick an area that would be central to visiting the sites you have suggested as well as others we are researching. I'm just in the very beginning stages of planning so really don't know yet all of the places we'd like to see.
Lisa, Basilicata is a big region, where are you looking at? We have been to the area several times and may be able to make some recommendations for lodging.
