9049 Bene Culturare

I have a property in Sicily and have gained all the permissions I need to restore a property except from the Bene Culturale. I have been told this can take up to six months. Does anybody know how long the Bene Culturale normally take to make their minds up on housing projects. My project has been with them for over a month already.

It is quite posible that the 'sovrintendenza dei beni culturali' could take six months. In theory, they have 60 days in which to make their representations, but their trick is to write to you on day fifty-nine and ask for clarification of some piddling detail, at which point the sixty days starts again.

However, Sicily (depending on the Province), has recently had some good press comment on getting planning decisions through within a sensible time scale, so you might be lucky, though don't hold your breath!

Hi Elaine, Ramsay from modicasa here..

It will take 6 months. The Beni Culturali in the comunes of Siracusa/Ragusa are very precise - its not worth trying to beat them to the chase - better just to sit and wait. Were you aware that you had vincoli paesaggistici when you bought? If the BC decide that you must restore exactly as the house was before you have to take them at their word, or they will make you tear down everything that they dont like...

Best to be patient - believe me!
