11573 Heavy Rainfall

For anyone who is travelling down to Calabria I suggest you check out the current situation on the roads. Recent heavy rainfall has caused a lot of land slides resulting in roads being closed!

This is an update from ANAS:
Al momento, si registrano tratti ghiacciati su alcune strade statali della Calabria e neve sulla strada statale 107.
Si ricorda che il tratto dell’autostrada A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria tra gli svincoli di Scilla e Villa San Giovanni è chiuso, per pericolo frane, in entrambe le direzioni. Il provvedimento è stato disposto dal Prefetto di Reggio Calabria, Francesco Musolino, su segnalazione ed apposita ordinanza compartimentale dell’Anas Ufficio Speciale Salerno Reggio Calabria, per nuovi pericoli di frane e smottamenti.
Chiuso al traffico anche il tratto della A3 tra Cosenza Nord e Falerna, a seguito della frana del 25 gennaio scorso.
Sulla strada statale 18 è chiuso, per frana, il tratto tra Scilla e Villa San Giovanni, con deviazione sulle strade statali 106 e 682. E' in corso un accurato sopralluogo da parte dell'Anas e della Protezione Civile nazionale al fine di valutare le possibilità di riapertura del tratto nelle prossime ore.
In Sicilia rimangono chiuse la statale 113 per frana e la statale 120 per problemi sul manto stradale.

My friend in Calabria has been sending emails saying how very depressing this winter has been. Rain rain rain and more rain. The blocked roads will make her journey up to Umbria difficult but she can't wait to get away. Seems the north and south have suffered much more than the middle of Italy so far this winter.

Lazio too. Remember the dangerous levels of the Tiber in the last few months??? (Apparently Rome generally gets more rain than London)

It is depressing! Rain has been that heavy the few months that we're now left with huge crater -like potholes! Some measuring 1 metre! When they'll get fixed is another matter!
