A friend here uses the books supplied by school to help the children learn, also, if you can get into a decent bookshop, there are books on nursery rymes etc., with English & Italian text and short quizzes and stuff loads of fun.

I teach in an Italian school. I teach the Scuola Materna and the elementare. There are loads and loads of materials about that don't cost much. Ask the the school what they use, the book shops generally have a good selection. Our local libraries is also pretty good.
