869 Letter Boxes

Does anyone out there know what a letterbox is called in Italian? I mean the metal ones which you see attached to the wall on the ground floor of apartment blocks one for each family - not ones which go on the front door. Although now I come to think of it they probably don't have them on their front doors!

Linda,

Best I can suggest is 'cassetta per le lettere' or 'buca delle lettere'. Hope this helps.

CORRECT, but you can use "cassetta per/della la posta" too

Thanks to all who responded to my question. I have now found lots of cassetta postale on italian web sites and they are much cheaper than in the UK, so I will order one to be delivered to my house in Italy rather than taking it out with me. Great forum!
