Hope i am in the right section but we have a few friends visiting our place this year and have a bit of difficulty in being able to explain pronto soccorso, guardia medica etc. as in which option do you choose for which ailment or emergency. Hope someone can help me on this as it is all very confusing and I need to lie down because I feel so faint (so do I call ospedale, pronto soccorso or guardia medica?)
Thanks very much

Pronto Soccorso = accident and emergency as in the UK, so covers minor to major conditions. Is usually based in a largish hospital.
Guardia Medica = out of hours GP type service. However, just to really confuse things in some ares (ususally where a PS is a bit of a trek) it is often available 24 hours out of 24 so is basically for minor problems for which you need medical treatment not offered by the GPs i.e. stitches, but not x-rays etc. Is often based in a smallish community type hospital.
