Had one put in about a year ago. They had to replace almost half of 38 existing old poles, which were rotten, and then add a new cable from the nearest pole to the house, drill through etc etc. Cost under €500 and was done from start to finish in about 6 months. Most of the delays were caused by the winter since they couldn't get their kit onto the heavily water-logged fields to replace poles until the Spring - something the installers warned us about right at the start.

500 euros - that sounds far more reasonable. We're going out towards end of April so will start the process rolling.
Thanks for your help.

I wonder if you have considered Voip phones, they connect via a broadband link to your computer. I use one and buy credit from Eutelia, calls to the uk for me are 1.5 cents per minute anytime of day. You can purchase a phone for 19 euros and have 19 euros of credit, so the phone is actually free. Check out their website, EUTELIA, it is in English and easy to understand. Emergency calls cannot be made from Voip, but if you have a mobile you will be covered.

Voip calls are cheap but I need broadband and therefore would need a landline unless I use mobile broadband which I was considering as we only surf the net and use e-mail. We also want to Skype and a webcam to keep in touch with family etc but not sure whether the video aspect of Skype will devour a monthly download of 3GB to 5GB which is what you get with mobile broadband.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
That monthly allocated bandwidth is generous enough not to be bothered by continuous use of a webcam, however the upstream connections for mobile broadband in my experience aren't very good with typically awful response times (pings). I've yet to use a mobile connection for web conferencing that has come even close to a land-line equivalent. Perhaps someone here has had better experiences.
broadband

My broadband is wireless to the house, via a 12 inch square white box located on my upper terrace, then hard wired into a modem for wireless/wired internet indoors. We skype but not for phone calls as Eutelia are cheaper. We installed this system october 2008 and have had no trouble with broadband, touch wood. I can quote you prices we paid if you like.

hi there
we are in puglia too, we are in the countryside and have opted against having a landline as it seems to take forever to organise and it is costly. For our internet access we use a network 3 key modem, which costs 19euro a month and allows us approx. 5 hours of internet a day. The signal wasnt so good but we now have it on a 5metre pole on the roof and the signal is great. For calling uk we either use our computer with skype and webcam but just recently i have bought a network 3 mobile skype phone. As long as you get a 3 signal at home then it is perfect. I can speak with friends here and in the uk anytime of the day or night and if you buy the phone here it costs 99euro (pay as you go) and you have to put 5euro of credit on every month. Mine is the uk version and cost 69 pounds sterling for 2 phones! I have to put 10 pounds worth of credit on every 90 days...its brilliant.
hope this helps

Hi scooter
I have heard of these 12 inch square white box situated on your roof with line of sight with the local transmitter. We live on the coast with hills behind us and the nearest sizeable town is the other side of the hills but not sure whether we are in line of sight of a transmitter.
Also heard it was cheap to have installed - a fair few hundred euros ?? Could you give me a more accurate figure.
Thanks
Martin

Hi Snappersass
Could you explain what it is you have on a 5 metre pole ??? When you mentioned a network 3 key modem I thought you were referring to a dongle and then you mentioned the 5 metre pole. At the end of the day is it mobile broadband you have. As you did use Skype and a webcam was your uploading ok as it was mentioned in this post that mobile broadband and video calls aren't that good.
As it so happens my wife has a 3 network UK mobile but unfortunately the signal drops off as we come down the hill to our house !! All the other networks are reasonably ok. I think when we want to phone all the family we'll go to the nearest cafe bar and have a few coffees and cakes and make all the phone calls !!
Thanks
Martin

When we moved from town to a property that we had rebuilt we contacted TI to arrange transfer of our phone/broadband. It was a catalogue of problems, including them actually cutting of my conenction in town which I needed for work before even getting a quote to transfer. After a year and numerous visits by TI workmen we still had not even received a firm quote. We had various verbal (c €1000) quotes and at one point notification of our new number and the date it would be connected. Given we live 800m down a white road and we needed poles etc the notification of number/connection made us laugh - no poles!!! Needless to say nothing happened. We finally gave up in December (sick of driving to previous property to use broadband to work) and bought a vodafone dongle and pay as you go deal of €30/month for 100 hours. In February Vodafone then introduced a contract and I now have 10 hours per day for €30/month. This should save me the hassle of charging up every month (it didn't go smoothly!) but haven't got to the end of the first month yet. We looked into Tim but found Vodafone gave us much better 3G signal. I use broadband to run UK financial services software and have had no problem with speed/ signal (touch wood) so far :) Life really is to short to wait for TI.

Thanks Scooter for the info. 240 Euro and 20 euro a month seems ok to me especially when reading some of the horror stories such as Karen's above. As we live in a residential area i.e telegraph poles along the road we'll get a quote from TI and weigh things up.
Regards
Martin

Karen - sorry to hear your horror story with TI. I was considering mobile broadband as a quick solution but from what I can understand it isn't that brilliant with Skype and a webcam. Never know though if wec an't have the the white box solution and TI is a nightmare then we might end up with mobile broadband after all.
Cheers
Martin

Vicarym, where exactly are you in Puglia? I am also in Puglia, and know people who have managed to get a landline fairly quickly (i.e. less than a year), people in the same town, or at least just outside the town, who have waited two years. Ours was connected within 3 months of moving here, but we had started the ball rolling much earlier. We are now, however waiting for a second line, have been for over a year, and the pole is already in our garden.:laughs:
Hi Martin
It could be any price, its based on distance from pole/closest house, ours was 2500E and that was being allowed to go over land (1800m) as we know the farmer, lots more if you have to go underground, have a look at 187.it for monthly charges etc .............good luck
PS It took us 2 years to get the line up and running
