I have an ING Sterling savings account but cannot see anything on their website about Euro accounts. I'm really looking for a current account or at least one that will provide a euro cashpoint card.

You would have to open an account in a country which has the Euro. Then transfer (wire) money back and forth.
Have you thought of ...

The Italian post office account. It has online access and allows you to pay bills, recharge telephones etc from anywhere via the internet. Of course you get a cashcard and cheque book too. Maximum charge is €30 or so a year.

Still suggest Banc di Roma they are very helpful and will help you open an account as soon as you get here and can show your proof of address.
Good luck with that exchange by the way, dragging it out aren't they!
By the way nothing against using the post office but not sure how much you can do online and the prospect of spending hours in queues, they can get rather busy!! Banking is still a very personal service here.

We will be looking at Bank di Roma as well.
Thanks for the good luck, we certainly need it. We've set a deadline for 4pm on Monday and if the chain is not ready then we will go back to our alternative buyers. Luckily they have exchanged on the sale of their house, complete on 30th November, have not found another house they like and have not found rented accommodation yet!
