We have close connections with the netherlands OUR mail arrives in holland and is received MAX 2-3 DAYS however we would ONLY use priority mail.
If the problem id dekivery by the local post office in italy tell your friends to pick it up whenever they go by the post office ,we do ,there can be objective difficulties in delivery like the snow we have at the moment etc,just make sure you use priority mail "normal" postage will hardly arrive.
for bigger parcels

Mick I've used this company a couple of times now for sending bigger parcels - much much cheaper than fedex and DHL, takes about 4 days from the uk and they pick up from your home. I sent two 20k parcels 2 weeks ago for £70. A single parcel up to 25k is £30 plus VAT.

there is no secret... its a lottery as to if it arrives at all.... however we have had parcels with the sort of international parcel companies arrive in good time so that might be an option ...though costly...
the main airports all have gangs working that sift the mail for anything looking valuable... which might well hold it up for a day or two...and i presume this then goes onto the smaller sorting offices...maybe another day or so... have recently had sveral strikes as well... involving trains...and a general one too
deliveries are made when the postman thinks he has enough mail to make the trip worthwhile... so in that sense it is irregular.... and we live in a village ... i dont know how often it would arrive if we happened to live in a rural property....
its a sort of hazard of life here... once when they were on strike we used a private post office company they..guarantee.. next day delivery and it was important it arrived... five days later it did get there.... so i would say you really just have to put up with it...some days it works well ...and others... just not so good... this is italy... and the service however bad or good always comes with a smile
