3582 codice fiscale won't accept my country?

Hi everyone. We're going to Rome for 7 weeks in less than 2 weeks and are going to get a TIM prepaid SIM. I've gone on the site that calculates your codice fiscale, but it won't accept my country of birth. I was born in FYR Macedonia, but am Canadian with a Canadian passport (living in London). When I put in Canada, no problem, but I can't put in Macedonia no matter how I try to enter it. I'm worried I'll go to buy and register my SIM and they'll say my code is wrong because the place of birth is wrong. Or maybe they won't look too closely at it? I suppose I shouldn't risk it, I could get a SIM on eBay now for about £8 so I will probably just do that. But my boyfriend's codice fiscale worked fine, so is it cheaper for him to just buy his there? How much do SIMs go for over there?

Thanks a lot for your help.

In order to buy a SIM they need a copy of your codice & passport; I'd suggest that they would not be too bothered as most see this as a bit of necessary bureaucracy(!)

Anyway, have a Plan A (you buy & hope they don't worry!) and a Plan B (boyf buys)

SIMs are about E10 & come with credit; make sure your phone is unlocked (or you chose the right kind of "band" (1800 or 1900) depending upon where your phone's from.

Don't do eBay; get it locally as it's much easier & keeps trade within your local community; to need to know that each new SIM needs to be 'turned on' buy calling a landline......only then can you call a mobile. We spent ages calling one another trying to get then cards working & were told the 'secret' activiation rule after much grey hair!

...........unless this is an urban myth?!?!

I got a SIM before I ever came out via an online provider in the UK and only needed a passport number. Unfortunately my phone was locked and I returned to the UK without having used it! Unlocked the phone with a bit of internet research and now living here and it's fine.

Probably paid a little bit for the privilege of having the SIM ready and waiting (ho hum!) but it wasn't excessive.

We bought a TIM sim pay-as-you-go or ricaricabile, and all they needed was my passport which is a good thing as all we have to show our codice fiscale is written on our bank details!! We never recieved the paper or card from our agents - but then they are about as much use as a chocolate tea pot as I have said before!

I bought a phone with a WIND SIM Card, at Auchan in Ancona. They didn't ask me for anything.

I'm going with the guys who are saying forget the CF. A pay as you go SIM does not involve any "contract", thus IMO there is no reason why they should ask you for a CF. It is a bit of "historic stuff" - but since the goalposts are moved on an hourly basis (or on depending who you ask) if you get a bolshy SIM vendor, they might invoke some anti terrorist legislation saying they have to have a valid CF..........if your boyfriend trusts you (!) follow the advice to use his CF!

I agree - I also only needed my passport - I got TIM

I bought my phone from www.mphone.co.uk - it took 4 days to arrive - and sim free unblocked with guarantee - I would prefer to do that - than go ebay

If you are interested in using the internet with a laptop - then check out the thread GPRS and EDGE also check out the website http://www.prepaidgsm.net/

Surfing in Italy is a damn sight lot cheaper than the UK - I get 1GB/24h (9GB eve and w/e) with TIM pre pay - for a month (although I am only getting 115Kbs connection rate - Tuscanhills is getting faster - but then I am in a poor area --- :(

Thanks so much everyone. Sounds like it varies from seller to seller, so I suppose if I try somewhere and they say no I'll move on to the next one. I do have a print out of my codice fiscale, but it's done it using my place of birth as Canada instead of Macedonia. But since I have a Canadian passport hopefully they won't start reading the fine print of my passport and make a fuss. My boyfriend's is fine, he has the print out with Great Britain on it which is his place of birth. So we'll take our chances. I had the feeling I was getting slightly ripped off on eBay so I'd rather not buy from there anyways. My main worry was that I'd get there, not be able to buy one and be stuck for the two months without a phone, but seems like that wouldn't be the case.

Should we take a photocopy of our passport picture page to give to the guy when we buy them?

And thanks for that tip Tuscanhills, the whole trip probably would have gone by and we wouldn't have figured that out!!!

:)

Thanks Robbie. We won't have a lease as we're only renting an apartment for 6 1/2 weeks. Also I don't have a birth certificate. Does this mean I can't get one? Do you go along with everyone else who says I don't need the codice fiscale to get a SIM card?

Well i never saw one and i belive the Cades they are talking about are really expenive to use... but go to the office with your passport and i belive it will be enough, and then you can get a card with either tim or vodafone
i use tim, but at the office they were really nice.
and then if you want to open a bank account you can
because you have the number

Good luck

Robbie

Hi,

Good news for you... go to http://www.frasi.net/utilita/codicefiscale/default.asp, and enter the following personal data:

Cognome = First name
Nome = Last Name
Luogo di Nascita = Place of birth --> click on the down-arrow then click on ESTERO, and after the list is updated select MACEDONIA from it; hit OK button and you'll see MACEDONIA appearing in the 'Luogo di nascita' field.

Select your gender from 'SESSO' drop-down list (M = male, F = female of course)

In the Provincia di nascita drop-down list select 'provincia estera' and then enter you birth date (day, month, year - European format).

Press CALCOLA button and you'll see your new beautiful CF appearing just on the right of the text CODICE FISCALE !

I tried to create a fake code using MACEDONIA as birth Country and it worked just fine.

Easy, isn't it ?

wow that's good isn't it? thanks for finding that. if i print that page out will they accept it if it says facsimile on it? or should i write the code down on a bit of paper and use that instead?

thanks
debi

Just print the result page, I guess it's enough.
