Are there different types of bottled gas. When i replaced a bottle recently and pointed to one in the shop yard which was the same size the shopkeeper said-no ,that type is just for cooking and sent his assistant out the back to get one another bottle which looked the same to me. My italian is not good enough to discuss this in detail so i am wondering if i will be able to use the bottle i bought for heating and cooking.I do not want to blow up the house.

I go to the store hand them money they hand me a 15kg tank. It's been green. It's been blue. Same store. Same fittings. Attached to the same gas boiler and gas stove. First the heating system and when it doesn't have enough pressure for the boiler it goes to the stove.
Is the colour supposed to mean some thing?
BTW aren't butane and propane supposed to be close enough to not matter?

we run a heating system on L.P.G it also supplies our hot water and we cook with it 15 litres costs us Euro 9.30 (at the moment) but more importantly we don't run out or have to cart heavy cylinders around (they always run out at dinner time anyway),the cylinder is underground and filled by the cistern lorry.

The green coloured bomboli of LPG gas here in Italy are not expensive. It would be cheaper to buy an inexpensive wheel around heater for as little as E50.00... The bomboli are freely available in just about every village and in ours are 15kg at E19.00, 25kg at E32.00

Many thanks to everyone for their helpful responses. My problem is that the fire I am taking over to Italy is a Verine Thurcroft which looks like a wood burning stove in black cast iron. It only takes a 7kg bottle of gas and the larger ones of 10 or 15 kg would not fit inside.

I did a bit of research and I found that the bottles for domestic use are from 10 kg upwards; however Campingaz has a bottle of 5.70 kg which may be what you need. Only problem.... I do not know where you can get those around Bagni... but there should be someone selling them nearby.
Thanks for the info.

Thanks for that information. Never thought of Camping Gas. Will definitely look into it next time we visit in March.

Hi Lindsay. If you are still here, please can you confirm whether or not you brought your gas stove to Italy and whether you were able to source 7kg bottles for it? Thank you.
There is a supplier at Fornoli, phone number: 00390583805248: however, I am not certain regarding the size of the cylinders. Also, butane gas cylinders is very expensive. In November, we paid 40 euros for each 10kg cylinder (I can't remember whether it was 10 or 15 kg)... and it only lasted a couple of days. We are connecting to mains gas after this experience...
