I read it earlier this year. Loved it! In fact I had my first taste of Fernet Branca this year as a result. Not hooked yet though.
Hate the stuff  I can't believe anyone would cook with it. From my experience it's predominantly imbibed as a hang-over cure. Sorry guys, it's revolting :(

My take on the book (although this may be way off) is that he used Fernet as an allegory for the main character's attitude to life and relationships although in a wickedly funny way. In other words he was fairly vile to all and sundry. What I couldn't decide was whether he was taking a swipe at Brits in general or just the main character who was British. But then again, maybe I'm completely wrong.

It would actually be fun if this title was able to circulate a few forum members via the Vita Book Club???

I picked up this book here - in English - and laughed so hard during the first couple of chapters- that I cried. It was 2 a.m. -had to call my sister in Alaska and read some of the passages. As she and I are both chefs...the ridiculous recipes were especially funny.
Having been married to a Brit..I also found the main charachter to be slightly...well, familiar. ;)
