As a fan of Sofia Loren (and director de Sica) I have to add at least some her 'home made' films ...
Matrimonio all'italiana (Marriage Italian-Style)
C'era una volta (Cinderella: Italian Style More Than a Miracle
Boccaccio '70
Oh... and I liked My House in Umbria...

One of my faves - and I really recommend it for the picture of life in provincial pre-war Italy - is Amarcord by Fellini. It's just brilliant, funny touching and true. Do add it to your list.

Il Girasole - Sofia Loren & Marcello Mastroianni
and also the original of the film that Madonna tried (&flopped) to remake, but Icant remember the whole title - something like
Tutti sperduti su un isola deserta--------------starring Giancarlo Giannini and Mariangela Melato
but one of my absolute favourites is Il Mostro - Roberto Benigni

Then there's de Sica's I Ladri di Biciclette (1948?), and Maurizio Nichetti's superb skit I Ladri di Sapponette. Personally I think Nichetti is a genius - his Volere Volare was simply incredible.

cannot recall the title, but its set in a smalltown around the local cinema.
a smallboy growing up,and then his return when older and famous to see that
the cinema has been closed down...anyone remember its name.......

Cinema Paradiso is gorgeous, and was given away as one of those free DVDs by The Guardian last year - so if you know anybody who takes that paper see if it's in their collection; you're not having my copy!:-)

I am kind of glad this topic came up again, as I have been trying to order ,through Amazon, an Italian film named, "The Seduction of Mimi". Unfortunately, Amazon is having a hard time filling my order; it is open since a few months now.
Has anybody seen this film? I need a version that will play in the USA, I think it is region 2. If anyone knows where to buy this film, please send me a PM.

If you want a recent and very beautiful (even if very long) movie, I strongly suggest "La Meglio Gioventù" (The Best of Youth) directed by Marco Tullio Giordana.
It is a film about the recent italian history, from the terrorists years (1975/1985) until today and it is of exceptional value if you want to understand contemporary Italy.
It has been nominated by the "New York Times" one of the ten best movies of the last year.

Our family loved "Io non ho paura"
IMDB 7.7 / 10
While playing outside one day, nine-year-old Michele discovers Filippo, who is chained to the ground at the bottom of a hole. Michele witnesses town baddie Felice nearby and suspects something bad is happening. Michele is unsure whom he should tell about his discovery, eventually spilling the beans to his closest friend. Michele's parents learn of his discovery and warn him to forget whatever he saw. (There is a lot more that goes on. This synopsis is far to basic, slightly incorrect, adding up to create quite a poor summary. I highly suggest this movie, the filming is wonderful with a great flowing soundtrack to accompany the story which is enjoyably slow. I think that this is the way movies are meant to be-without product sponsors and glittery special effects, just human stories)

Toto', Peppino e la Malafemmina

and the absolutely brilliant il Marchese del Grillo with Alberto Sordi
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082714/
There are so many more, other Sordi films, plus I also enjoy Carlo Verdone films and not forgetting La Vita e' Bella, from Benigni, a most magiacal film.
I enjoy the older Italian films too, things with Aldo Fabrizzi, Vittotio de Sica, etc.

There is a film about an Italian family who go to England and open a Cafe. La Bella Machina, the coffe machine is mentioned repeatedly but I'm not sure if this is the name of the film. Does anyone know it? I'd love to see it again.
Not so much a movie...

... but rather a TV series.
Going back over 25 years now I remember me & my mother (in Germany) watching a series called Don Camillo & Beppone (sp?). I think it was filmed in the 50s and showed post-war village life with daily 'disagreements' between the Catholic priest and the Communist mayor of the village. Thought it was very funny but can't remember any details (area, dates, etc) and haven't come across it since.
Can anyone remember?
Cheers! :)

"Posso fare qualche cosa per lei?"
"Si" ruggi Peppone. "Potete andare all'inferno voi e tutti i preti dell'universo!"
"Troppa gente, compagno. Non mi piacciono i viaggi in comitiva" rispos don Camillo.

Thanks, Sirena!! Funny that - I lived in Cardiff for 2 years and they never had something like this on... come to think of it, Barry is not quite the centre of culture... :D
I think Matron prefers the old films...

Ciao! Yes the series is about Don Camillo (a priest) and Giuseppe Bottazzi called Peppone who is the mayor in Brescello.
Brescello is a small village in Emilia Romagna.
In Italy every year "Don Camillo" is broadcasted on tv. It's very nice!
The series includes a lot of films:
- "Don Camillo"
- "Don Camillo e l'onorevole Peppone"
- "Il compagno Don Camillo"
- "Don Camillo e i giovani d'oggi"

I too remember the Don Camillo films in the 50's. We saw them in Manchester & they were a scream. I also have one or two books on the Don Camillo stories, they are in Italian. They were about the rivallry between the Catholic local priest Don Camillo & the Communists non-believer Mayor Peppone. Great stuff.
