OK Let's get this tour off to a good start.
Probably Venice's most famous drink is the Bellini Cocktail a delicious mix of peach juice and champagne or prosecco.
The cocktail was invented by Giuseppe Cipriani in the famous Harry's Bar in 1948.
The name is said to have come from the fact that at this time there was an art exhibition by the painter Bellini and so hence the name.

It could well be that there was an exhibition of Bellini in 1948 - but since he is a famous "Son of Venice", and the Galleria dell'Academia is just about full of his paintings - I think his name was just adopted because it was appropriate and local!
I'm not the greatest fan of Bellini - (and there were a few of them, cousins, sons etc etc - more like Bellini inc.) - but they all had in common a complete inability to render a tree with any semblance of verisimilitude! Nonetheles, decorative paintings, of (I would suggest) the same lightness of touch as the Bellini cocktail.
Now - show me a Tiziano (Titian - another famous son of Venice) cocktail and I think that would be very much more challenging and more liable to satisfy my debauched tastes....... :)
I'm going to work now on the Brenta Canal thread!!
