the bbc news report is pretty light weight i would say and basically seems to me to be a sort of political release from the Italian government or one of its eu commissioners... this has been going on for 20 or so years...and really has no significance because everyone here in Italy knows that that area...the so called fields of fire area has been contaminated with all the worst type of waste possible and the contamination has very little to do with the domestic waste problems of Naples...

indeed do a search on toxic waste in the search box of this forum and you will get a much better informed discussion... including the one on the abruzzo problems in the provinces of aquila and pescara... where dioxins have been known to have got into the water supply and it all being kept wuite...the sad thing being that they placed filters but never changed them ... so they were in effective....

the consequences for italy and its food production being ignored in the rush for EU grants to basically use for private incomes amongst many local and national politicians and to let the people stew in the filth...

here's a real report on the situation... you can either read the transcript or watch the video... the part where the three thousand sheep die from eating grass is particularly disturbing to watch ...and was shown first in a different report that came out at xmas this year...

hopefully now that the international market is being effected there will actually be something done... but unlikely ...there have been billions of eu euro spent in that area ...in fact all over the south...and nothing seems to change...the president of the region has just been charged with his involvement in the funds disappearing

however things always seem to just go quite...much like the abruzzo problem...strange to think there was almost more news on that on this forum than in any local paper here... and now as the tourist season gets close again there will most probably be even less

it seems to me the mentality here is that they would rather die than admit to a problem...that a few tourist euros earned today is more important than their children's health...

even worse this if you consider that we have just had an environment minister that is the president of the lega ambiente and his whole interest through two years of government seems to have been getting EU grants for alternative energy rather than attacking what everyone knows here ...that there are italians dying for no reason whatsoever apart from political and criminal greed....
