The few times I have had this I would agree it is worth the hype, and I lived deep in the American beef country for 20 yrs. Nothing like a choice plate of beef that fills the whole plate.

haven't had one in Firenze, but do remember tackling one in Umbria a few years ago and my jaw has only just recovered - it's quite frankly a ridiculous amount of meat for one person to eat at a single sitting! Lashings of vino rosso would be required before (courage) and during (lubrication), and a stiff digestif therafter (anaesthetic) would not go amiss.

Had my first one close to il ponte vechio in Florence about 15 years ago - the mad chef took one look at me and said that was what I had to have. he gave my wife a dustbin lid sized mushroom. Well worth the hype.
Seems to me a bit of a win/win situation too inso far as we get to eat the good stuff, and the cows get to live an extra 6 months!!

Worth every penny -- if you ever find yourself in Firenze, try the bistecca at Coco Lezzone on the corner of Purgatorio and Parioncino -- but do take about 6 people to eat that kilo or more of steak (and plenty of soldi)! Also, try to sit in the front room at the communal table (as the locals do). We usually start with the farfalle con tartufi bianchi (well, if it's autumn, anyway) -- my family's been going there for forever, I think. The waiter WILL yell at you if you don't finish, and of course, there is no doggy bag in Italy (traditionally, wine and food left at the table belong to the waitstaff or the major d'omo).
Yes, the "bisteca" is one of my favourites. It is a grilled TBone steak, really delicious and it is true that the age of the animal is important to give the right flavour. I am glad that they lifted the ban.
