Good idea

Thanks Dixi good idea, will see how today goes ie if the owner turns up. A white van came down the lane this morning and the dog went to the door, we went out, but it turned round and drove off.
If the dog has adopted us it would be absolutely fine if we were here all the time but we are not yet - it is exactly the kind of dog we would have - next year hopefully!
Sweet little thing obviously cared for.
Is there any form here for dealing with lost dogs - report to police, is there an animal rescue service. We are in Amandola, Le Marche.
In theory dogs should be microchipped and their details recorded and held with the local ASL Vet office - so it should be possible to trace the owner. Obviously this assumes the dog has been chipped but as you say it has been well cared for the chances are it does have a chip which could be read with the scanner at any vets. Good luck.

Thanks Anne -
The problem is now solved - tutto bene. Giovanni a nieghbour knows where the dog lives and will tell the "owner". Seems the dog was a stray and is looked after by the family a bit further up the lane.
Think that turning up on our doorstep and coming in when we opened the door and sleeping in front of our fire was just him trying out the other local hotels! Cheeky blighter!
Anyway it is a relief, and he is very sweet!

Too soon everyone!- owner hasn't shown up and dog isn't going anywhere! he runs in every time we open the door and is currently hiding in the niche at the side of the fireplace as if to say "I really won't take up much room! If we shut him out he sits outside shivering and whining.
We have knocked on all the doors 1/2 mile either way up the road from us putting my Italian to the test - thought onelady said yes he lives here - but as soon as I began to untie the wire we used as a lead her face said it all!
Might be looking for a new home at this rate - for the dog!
Anyone want a very sweet little pouch!

Hm you know how they say dogs choose you not the other way round?
I have visons of pet passports coming your way soon. Do ryanair take dogs? Tee..
Can you post a picture of him?
M

I think that the dog has found himself a good home. By the way, Ryanair does not fly dogs..... you are going to make some other kind of arrangements.
One last try

Arty.
If you have no luck then may be worth trying the vet in Sarnano, to check if it is microchipped, or other options. She speaks good English and we use her to look after our dog.
Her name is Dr Hena Annavini. Tel 0733 658374.
Would have offered to help, but don't know how our Maremmano would take to another dog at the house.
Good luck
Still looking for padrone

Thanks everyone!
Little rascal - we have tried almost every house now within 2 miles. He jumps in and out of the car now, lies on their doorstep on his back, wriggling and looking cute. No takers.
We will go to the Vets on Monday.
Meanwhile if anyone knows of someone who would be willing to be temporary carers in between our trips, and until we are here full time next summer please do let me know.
Pic attached!

It's a gorgeous little rascal. I do hope that somebody near you would be able to look after him during your absence.
Gorgeous, sweet etc

You are right Dixie, if there was a little pet dog made in heaven he is it .... we have just been cooking and eating dinner and the whole time he has stayed in his bed near the fire .... merely stiring to roll over on his back wriggling when he thought there was a chance of a tummy tickle. Travels in the car without a car, friendly etc etc...... oh dear why does he have to turn up a year early! I know many an elderly person in england for whom he would be an ideal pet. All the research show our blood pressure lowers, we feel better and we live longer when we have a sutable pet.
Going to start an urgent thread as we are only here for another week ....:veryconfused:

Good luck
Our two English dogs hated other dogs when we were in England and would fight on sight, if given the chance (which they weren't!!).
When we bought our house here there were already two abandoned dogs on site, and we wondered what would happen when Rupert and Harvey arrived. Since then we have adopted another Italian pup. The dogs all get on fine, with the exception of the Italian male, and one of our (also male) English dogs.
Everything was fine until the Italian male, less than half the size of Harvey, decided he would snap at his heels when they were out, and set his cheek up to him when Harvey was on our balcony, and couldn't reach him. (The original Italian dogs live in the downstairs apartment with my mother, although the pup is upstairs with our two, and two cats).
We still manage fine, and just have to keep Alfie and Harvey apart, which we manage to do without too much difficulty.
If it were just short term perhaps it would work?

Some wonderful people have come to the rescue, and a new home has been found but for a small difficuly - they are away for the odd week - anyone near Amandola that could help out for a week, then this little lost dog can settle down to a new life!

Don't think so, Margaret as a few weeks ago a English neighbour brought his dog into the house and we thought we would see how ours re-acted to her new visitor. Unfortunately, lip curled up and very deep growls, even though the other dog was passive. Think it is the territorial thing with her. Did not fancy 50 kilos of dog having a fight in the living room!!!!
Good news though from Arty that he has found someone to look after his dog.

Fair enough, I suppose we are lucky that our dogs did accept the other dog, although she is female, and just a pup. Also glad to hear Arty has found someone to look after the dog.
Oh, and we regularly have 50 kilos of dog fighting in our living room - trouble is they are both our dogs:no:

Our Maremmano is 50Kg, the poor greyhound was nowhere near that size, so didn't want to risk it!!!

Sadly our old dog had to be put down, just a week short of her 18th birthday. Our other dog missed her company and now we have a new member of the household. He is only 2 1/2 months old and already weighs 11kg. He has feet the size of dinner plates!
Here they are

Sorry to hear about your other dog Nielo. I have gone through the same thing many times as well. You lose a partner and a dedicated friend.
Glad that the new member of the family has settled in and hope he doesn't eat you out of house and home
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Thanks Geotherm, we are more worried that he will eat the house! He is red setter x Maremmano, so he's going to be a big boy. He is going to need to be well trained. Do you have any problems with aggression with your Maremmano? I have been told they can be difficult but his dad is a soppy thing that sleeps in the road most of the time. Our other dog is very big, as you can see, but she is very gentle and obedient, she has undertaken some of the training and so far all is going well.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
She can get aggressive at times, though it is usually very rough play with us. Strangers she has to get to know, but even then a friend came into the house when we were round the back and ended up being pinned against the wall as she left!!!
Ours sleeps in the road as well, hates cyclists and motorbikes and depending on her mood the idiots who think the white road past our house is Monza Racecourse. She waits like a wolf and then springs out at the cars. Have not managed to stop her of that habit.
They are very protective of their owners and property and ours is only 18 months old, but Italians normally steer well clear of her...... they know their reputation.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Sorry to hear about your dog, Nielo. It is very sad when they have to go... I've been through this experience several times. At least you have the puppy to look after... and it looks as if he is going to be a handful!!!! Very beautiful young dog.

Your pup looks gorgeous - hope he gets his brains from the Maremmano side! We had Irish red setters for 15 years - beautiful, loyal, gentle, but only one brain cell between them. As for training, one came top of his class, the other was the clown and nearly expelled. Sadly, they're both gone now and our lifestyle, doesn't lend itself to owning a dog, backwards and forwards to Italy. Enjoy!
Ciao.

a little puppy appeared from nowhere on the square. It was nobody's!!! The neighbours even suggested to get rid of it (won't tell how!!). :reallyembarrassed: The thing is he strangly look like the neighbour's *****!! :veryconfused: Anyway, he adapted us, we share him with a friend neighbour. He's lovely and a great company.
We are not in your area, but I would notify the comune and the local police. You could also make some little posters or leaflets, preferably with a photo of the doggy, and distribute them around. I think that in this case you should say "cane trovato". Should all this fail to produce results.... well, possibly doggy has adopted you. Good luck!
