Thanks for your reply, I have my interview with the Consulate in Manchester next week, and had assumed that I would be offered an Identity card, as other Italian Nationals are required to carry. If I take a Passport does this make me a resident? I thought that Residency was determined by an application to a specific comune.

I think that technically you will be granted to you as soon as all the nationality paperwork is completed (registration of birth and marriage certificates, etc. in the Central Registry in Italy). Then, you can apply for an Italian passport. You can be an Italian residing in Italy or overseas. Generally, an Italian ID card is issued to residents in Italy by the Ministry of the Interior. If you are an Italian residing overseas, you generally have to put your name in the list of the nearest Italian consulate, but you are not an Italian resident. You have the right to reside in Italy whenever you want as an Italian citizen. Now, I do not know how this could affect the purchase and registration of a car.... I would say that you could possibly do it.....

Thanks for your response. Can you tell me what documents you have to show when you buy\register a car. Do you have to show your residency certificate, or passport/ identity card if you are a citizen.

No idea.... perhaps those who have purchased or registered a car will be able to help. It looks as if there is a bit of confusion over this topic, you only have to do a search through the car purchase or registration threads and you will find out.... This is just my opinion, but I do not think that anyone could refuse an Italian citizen, even a non-resident, to purchase or register a car in Italy. It would not make sense.... But then, some funny things happen in Italy. I hope somebody more knowledgeable will be able to clarify....
I am not quite sure about this, but where did you get your Italian identity card? It must have been in Italy as consulates can only issue passports, as far as I know. Therefore, if you have an ID card, Italy considers you a resident..... I may be wrong. Just check.
