11985 Bank Holiday

In trying to book car hire we have discovered that Saturday 25 April is a Bank Holiday. What is the occasion?

And do car rental firms (in Ancona/Pescara airport locations anyway ) generally shut on on these dates??

It's the Festa della Liberazione - end of the war in Italy 1945.

I'm not sure about car hire firms - best ask the one you're thinking of booking. If they're based at an airport I would imagine they will be open.

Outside of airports I would imagine they will only be opening Sunday hours (ie mornings only) if they open at all but check as Carole said.

The car hire desks should be open, and petrol stations on motorways will also be open. Watch out for petrol off the motorways though, only one in four will be open. Bars and restaurants, and shops in touristy places will be open, but most other shops will be shut - (though the bigger supermarkets may be open). The same applies to May 1 (another bank holiday) if you are staying more than a week

One useful tip we were given is that if resturants are closed, try to Autostrada Ristorante (as opposed to the Autostrada Bar) as these are often open & proive surprisingly good nosh......it's only of our "bankers" if all else fails.

I'm sure friends arrived at Ancona airport last year on April 25th and picked up their hire car without any problems - I can remember us explaining the reason for the holiday to them, so it should be okay. As has been said smaller shops may be shut but the larger supermarkets tend to be open as usual.

does anyone know about bank hours on this bank holiday as my husband has booked for the 24th April flying in to Pescara. He will also be hiring a car so will need to make sure all car hire firms are open but also the banks, thanks Maureen

Our bank is usually only open until 11am and some others do not open. Probaby not a good day for banking

If you haven't checked your calendars, 25th April is a Saturday, hence adding to my slight puzzlement over a) the description of the event as a Bank Holiday - in good old UK weekend holidays aren't ususally described as a BH as the banks, traditionally, weren't open - and b) the apparent closure of eg Avis and others (last time I checked their websites anyway)

Unlike the UK, in Italy all public holidays are on the same date every year regardless of the day of the week so it it falls on a Sunday in effect it is 'lost' as it would not be moved to the Monday as happens in UK. To call them a Bank Holiday is in effect a misleading translation as they are known as 'feste' and can occur on a Sat or Sun when as you point out banks would be shut anyway.

FYI the public holidays are: 1 & 6 Jan, Easter Sunday & Monday (Good Friday is not a holiday here), 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 1 Nov and 8, 25 & 26 Dec

Banks would be shut anyway on the 25th as it is a Sat. Post offices are usually open on a Sat am but in this case will also be shut. Everything will be open as normal on the 24th.
