2383 A New Fun Toy / Way to Waste Time

If you want to see your favourite Italian landmarks and tourist attractions have a look at http://www.lifeinitaly.co.uk/Landmarks/Italian-Landmarks.htm.

The page is new (i.e. finished about 3 mins ago) and enables you to view a range of Italian landmarks from Satellite imagery. Full zoom on Florence Cathedral (or as they called it on UK telly a few days ago 'The Duomo Cathedral of Florence) looks amazing.

You can even find and suggest landmarks that can be added to the site for the viewing pleasure of others. Incredible prizes for the best suggestions!

Enjoy

what you want is earth.google.com - you can fly over Italy in 3d (need broadband)

Fantastic use of Google's technology Neil.

All we need now is for Google to invest some of their squillions of $$$ in giving us a map of Italy which has roads on it.... or even Rome would be a step in the right direction, eh? The place is looking kind of empty at the moment!

Cool website, Neilmcn... :)

Was checking out our hotel location & places of interest on Google Earth yesterday... amazing stuff ...

Thanks!
If the Google map for Italy was to the same standard as the maps for UK, USA, and Canada it would be fantastic. Then all hotels, agriturismi, airports, restaurants could be superimposed onto the map with contact details, webcam imagery and so on.

ADDED 21st Jan 2006
Now if you click on any point on the satellite image, a street plan / map is displayed centered around that point. It makes the 'toy' a lot more useful as it works for the whole of Italy and shows road names etc.

Hey neilmcn, how the flip-do-dooo did you manage that page, it's a stonker!

What's the secret?

The guy's a genius!

There's a introduction on using Google's map interface to make customised maps at the following address;
http://bluweb.com/us/chouser/gmapez/start.html
(You'll need to be reasonably clued-up on HTML to get going. This is my first faltering attempt.)

Maybe Neil will 'fess up how those road maps are done if we ask him nicely.

Yeah, come on Nelly!

How the blimey did you do the street map thing? It's genius!

.........there are nerds out here bleeding out the ears trying to work it out.

Have a little compassion, guv!

May I should start a new, nerdy thread entitled un-API chappy? Or drink less coffee in the morning?

........another question on co-ordinates.

How comes when I go onto Google Earth & look at the londitude & latitude there, they are TOTALLY different to those I gt when I go onto Google Maps?

Am I being dim?

Don't worry, it's HTML. Not REAL code! Give it to the designers! :)
