2804 buying a scooter - non resident

Someone mentioned to me that I would need to be resident if I wanted to buy/own a scooter in Italy. Does that sound right?

If not, what is the procedure and what documentations etc would I need to have ?

thx

The Trullo thread deals with regulations regarding who is permitted to ride a scooter and if you take a m/bike test in UK and pass you will be permitted to ride a bike in Italy and a little bit safer as a result of what you have learnt.
Italian youngsters are frighteningly skilled at handling scooters but there are still a lot of deaths hence the tightening up of regulations.
In terms of ownnership it should be the same as for a car:

safe riding

There is an interesting article in the current issue of Italy Magazine which discusses the buying and riding of a scooter in Italy bought by a non resident, well worth a read and available at all good newsagents (and one or two dodgy one's ;) )

Thank you everyone for your help.

Can anyone clarify what the regulations are for buying a vehicle by a non resident and keeping it at my holiday home in Italy?

Thanks
Ian
