We were bite free last summer using vitamin B complex as well as high-frequency plug-ins.
fly screens....

where we live we hardly have any mosquitoes (lucky) but we have flies(lots),bees, hornets, moths, bats, small birds, spiders, and anyone else thats around.Consequently we had fly screens fitted to ALL our windows, they do go up but we leave them closed all year round.Firstly we have found, contrary to what one may think that the worst period is not particularly the summer but the time from September to end November, when all the crawling insects would like to come in from the cooler weather,We have also found that the fly screens protect amazingly well our nice wooden fitments from harsh sunlight and direct rain/snow etc and best of all we have eliminated from our interiors all spiders which otherwise ,in the country get everywhere,we never have flies in the house,no wood digging insects can get in and none of this detracts either esthetically from the building nor does it take away light particularly.I would NEVER live again without them. However we did get them built in with our window frames rather than put them on afterwards.

these things sound amazing-pity they won't keep out the cinghiali!
what I'd like to know is whether they are different from mosquito screens
flying cinghiali?

You can pick up most of the stuff you need from the SMA Auchan, City Per outlets, or Brico's, or Agricolo's, you really need to get out more ;)
have also tried the plugs in things, great... and, a larger blue light jobby which coped well with anything that sneaked in.
Would like to make up some mosquito / moth screens to slot into some window apertures for summer months, (Have been qouted around euro150 per window for roller blind variety, which cannot afford right now) wonder if anyone knows where you can buy metal/wire mosquito mesh? We've used the fabric variety before that you can buy from most ferramentes but would prefer something a bit more robust so we can use year on year......? very grateful for any info.......
Yes, the (plastic) screen is very cheap from the Ferramenta. We made our own as a "temporary" measure three year ago, making frames from softwood and stapling the mesh to the frame. They are still there.
The term you want is zanzariere (I think) or what I asked for first time around "schermo delle zanzare" which is not correct but was understood.
It's worth learning the strict demarcation lines between trades in Italy. Anything to do with nets is done at the ferramenta. The collecting nets for your olives, garden fence, mosquito screens. But even so shops still catch me out. I went to the farmacia to buy a comb (fairly normal thing to do in the UK) she stared at me with disgust and produced a nit comb. When I told her I didn't have lice, she pointed out that she was a professional and they don't sell combs, just medical appliances.
Supermarket for combs.
I'm sure I have many other mistakes to make.

Group 55 sell DIY door and window fly screen kits at a very reasoable price that could be delivered to Italy. Look at this link to their web site from where you can order online or by phone 01772 310200: http://www.zencatalog.com/PestControl/pest_control_store_DIY_fly_screen_windows_and_doors__71.html
You can also purchase the mesh by itself if you prefer. It is a fine black pvc coated fibreglass, 1200mm wide, purchased by the metre at £6.25 plus VAT per metre

Have just thought (a rare thing indeed), because of the seasonal nature of these things, it is possible that the mesh etc., has not appeared in your local shops yet. I too used "temporary" light wood strips and stapled mesh a couple of years ago, I really must make permanent screens, will start tomorrow, or the day after, but definitely next weekend(ish) unless something else comes up... :)

We have wind here too, really, the grey mesh is surprisingly strong, all I used were normal staple gun staples through single mesh tacking it onto 25mmx12mm softwood fitted outside of the windows, it aint purty, but it has worked now for two years with no probs. I have also used one of the kits from city per, which simply consisted of the mesh and "Velcro" sticking the velcro to the window frame, then just pushing the mesh to it... fidly expensive(ish) but still working too.

I am very interested in the vitamin b complex tip. I've never heard of it before. How does it work? Iwondered what dose you need to take and how long before the benefits against midge bites start.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Janie did you GP recommend what dose you should take? I get bitten to death every year, they don't touch my hubby at all (obviously they prefer foreign blood!)
Thanks for that George - thats a top bit of news, did consider velcro but windows have a raised profile when closed so doesnt really work, but this solution is low tech and economic both of which I like! Any clever ideas for securing frames within apertures? was thinking of fixing to small blocks .....either way info much appreciated!!!
I used the brass plates for hanging mirrors on the wall, two on each side of the frame. I was able to fit the frame into the external wondow recess and screw the mirror plates to the wooden frame. There's a knack to making the frame exactly the right size to fit perfectly and I'm still not sure how I managed it but I did for all of the windows on the south and west sides fo the house.

Sorry about delay, haven't been able to get on t'net for a couple of days, my solution was VERY low tech, all frames interference fit, so, easier to maintain if necessary, and, no visible fixings, mind you, this house was built in the 60's, so windows all pretty uniform size, none too large so this was pretty easy here.

Susi,
No, the doctor didn't recommend a dosage. I just bought some over the counter vitamins and followed the guide on the bottle. One chemist, however, asked what I wanted them for and when I told him, he just about stopped short of laughing at the idea, saying that there was no scientific proof that they warded of the insects. I decided to trust my GP's judgement.

Will, Thank You  , I'll be whistling that blated theme tune for a couple of days now...
Ahh the good old days, only two TV channels to choose from, the sound of leather on willow wafting in from the village green. "Out of Town"...
(I sealed the gaps with a thin bead of silicone BTW)
We noticed some in our local Brico, but I suspect that any large DIY store has them too.
We still stick with the Vitamin B complex tablets to keep the mozzies away!
