2987 This is the third time I ask for us to consider

I took the following from another forum I belong to, and propose that we consider to post similar objectives under a unique section reserved for future reference. This would allow all of us to go to it, from time to time, to refresh our memories regarding proper conduct on our forums.

Also, it would allow anyone to suggest to another to review these rules, following a questionable post by that person.

Respect Colleagues

People have feelings, and in these forums we are conversing with real people. Remember to respond to colleagues on-line with the same respect and consideration expected in face-to-face discussions.

Treating someone with respect in a conversation does not mean avoiding disagreements with them. One way to show we value the beliefs of others is by discussing them. Even an attempt to refute another persons beliefs shows more recognition of value than simply refusing to talk to them at all. Regard honest and thoughtful exchanges of ideas, including disagreements, as a way of showing respect for the beliefs of others.

Don't forget that non-verbal communication - such as body language or facial gestures - aren't present in written communications.

Post Topics In The Appropriate Forum and Category

Focus our postings, questions, and responses alike, to the forum where they are pertinent. Avoid Lengthy Responses.

Each communication can generate a multitude of reactions and new directions in thinking. Work to keep follow-up comments focused on the point of the original message. Trying to cover too many points in one communication can lead to a lack of clarity and leave the readers hopelessly lost. A good rule is one concept or idea per topic or follow-up.

Remember, Topics are Not Private

This is the World Wide Web on the Internet. Even though the forums have some privacy controls, we still never know just where our words will end up or how they will be taken there. Words can hurt. Avoid jokes, sarcasm, anecdotes, and other language that may cause unwarranted pain to others. A whisper is as good as a shout on the internet.

Ask for Clarification

If you find yourself reacting with intense emotion to something in an on-line message, wait to respond until you can do so constructively. Some messages may unknowingly be ambiguous or subject to multiple interpretations. Asking for clarification before reacting may prevent misunderstanding.

Be Honest
Be honest with on-line colleagues and with yourself. Exploring possible viewpoints and arguments is an important part of this course.

Forgive Others
People make mistakes and may say things they wish they could take back. A bit of humility, tolerance, and forgiveness is required of us all if our intellectual community is to flourish. Thanks in advance for your patience.

General chat about Italy

Ooh, someones not going to like the red! :D

It is a sensible post Francis but we have a problem the forum is full of diverse humans and they make errors. :)

Great post, Francis.

Personally I like the red!

I have responded to Adriatica's post (http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=2984), which is very much in the vein as yours. I agree completely with what you have said. Trullo's post serves only to make such reminders of how we should behave even more pertinent.

Peter, I'm agreeing so why do you say that? And the joke about the red, does this mean we are not allowed to be funny ever on here?

And just to prove my point how posts and humans can cause error.

Have you discussed this with Ronald, as it sounds like his domain to make such decisions?

Hey man, I was only saying I liked the red! Of course there's room for humour. God forbid we should all be po faced. That'd be the quickest way to clear the forum. I really don't know where you picked the idea up that I may be anti-humour from. All I was saying is that we need to be respectful towards each other.

This to me highlights one of the problems of writing - you cannot express the intonation that comes with speaking, so that people realise that you are or are not being serious. Smileys help, but I never seem to get one of the ruddy things to slot in where I want it to!!

Well, that made me smile and sorry if I got you wrong, keep doing that lately!

The smiley will go wherever your cursor is, and they will be in the drop down in bar above or at side depending how you have set up your panel.

:D :D :D

Ronald has put up similar rules before and all can easily view them as a reminder... though common sense should really prevail methinks.

Thanks alot for making such an effort, though, Francis. It seems yours sound a little more polite... :D

To answer your question, all of my postings are visible to all, and if I remember correctly, yes I made this suggestion to Ronald as well in a subtle way.

Ronald does read our posts, and when he will find time, he will act as he sees fit, I am sure. He did respond to my prior suggestion to create a chatroom; has he not?

However, nobody is stopped from going back to my posts on this topic.;)
