This may well sound like that ,however as a an up and running business now for over four years now with tax, health, vat, fire and safety ,food and health regulations to comply with (and they do control and inspect in fact at times it even seems persecutory) we have become aware that most (of the brits) do undetake these things "abusivamente"in other words they get away with it by not registering as a business,by not having vat obligations and consequently all the rest which follows. This i can assure you is also begining to have an effect on the way some people are viewed here and many localpeople are begining to not feel so well disposed.Hopefully when the first tourist ends up on a zimmer frame in one of these stories it'll be better for everyone (except the poor sod to whom it happened) we would recomend that you only stay in officially recognised businesses the names and addresses of which can be found in the lists of all the various regions of italy
and the local provinces and avoid the improvising compatriots....
Me too!

I am glad Rosemary brought this up because I have wondered about it for some time and I suspect like Sebastiano that most of them don't have the proper insurance or certificates. If there is one thing I have learn't about small town Italy though if you tick people off they usually get their revenge!!
Susi
While the building itself may well be insured, I'm doubtful as to whether that insurance would cover compensation claims from holidaymakers who trip over a bag of cement, or who have heavy object fall on their heads.
As the Italian legal system runs so slowly, any injured tourists would probably give up any litigation anyway!
