3281 Child Benefit

Are there child benefits available to people from the UK who have moved to Italy, and if so where do you apply and how much is the benefit?

Many thanks

There have been a few discusions on the subject and this is just one of the threads, if you do a search you will find a few more. :)

The following useful info was provided my Neilmc

I don't think you can claim child benefit once you have left the UK permanently with your child. Looking quickly at the following document: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefit/ch5_notes.pdf it says:

You can normally get Child Benefit if you and the child or children you are responsible for usually live in the UK. Short absences abroad will not affect your right to Child Benefit and some people may have the right to Child Benefit even if they do not live in the UK.

also...

If your child goes abroad temporarily, you can continue to get Child Benefit for them for up to 12 weeks. You must tell us if your child is leaving the UK for more than 12 weeks.
If your child is temporarily abroad for more than 12 weeks, you may still get Child Benefit if they are abroad only for one of the following reasons:
• to receive full time education in an EEA country or Switzerland,
• to make an educational or foreign visit that is approved in writing by their school,
• to get medical treatment for an illness that began before they left the UK.

Just to add my two pennies - there are a couple of "bonus" payments available should you have a baby here but you'll have to forgive me as I can't remember the proper titles.

On having my baby in 2005, I was entitled to a maternity payment from the Comune. Its means tested, bizarrely, we had to show our italian bank statements for Sept 2003 (i.e. way before she was conceived) but I was entitled to a payment of around E1400. This was paid to me in a lump sum, but having spoken with other Marche mums, it appears to vary according to the Comune. One lady I spoke with last week said she's been told she's entitled to three months patment before the baby is born and two months after but can only apply once the baby is born.

Furthermore, the child also receives E1000 from the ministry for the interior, or at least it did whilst Mr B was still running the show. Kate had a lovely letter from Silvio saying if she dragged her mum down to the post office on a certain date, she would be entitled to E1000. However, this again is loosely means tested, I believe she wouldn't have been entitled to it if we'd earnt more than E60,000 in Italy in 2004.

Finally, I believe mum is also entitled to another payment if she has more than one child - although you might have to have three. Personally, I'm sticking to the one so I haven't looked into it. Info regarding this and the first payment should be available from the anagrafe dept at your local comune.

Hope this helps someone!
