3381 'Prince of Darkness' stands for election as President
Seven times Italian Prime minister, 87 year old Giulio Andreotti, is to stand for election as the Centre rights candidate for the Presidency.
Andreotti, who has been convicted of dealings with the Mafia (but subsequently acquitted due to 'a technicality') has said he would be pleased to be elected President.
One thing is for sure, if Andreotti is elected President, it will impinge further on the slim majority the Prodi coalition has in the Senate. Without a workable majority, Prodi will not be able to pass any reforms.

OMG didn't know he was still alive!!
I remember a few scandals from the 70s & 80s, which made big Europe-wide headlines...
Apart from his being a shady character - who'd want a president with one certain foot in the grave?? I thought his was a good age for retirement...
Who needs soap operas when you can 'watch' Italian politics instead! ;)
